RV Recipes: Fire Crackers

I am always on the look out for something new to make when my family takes our motorhome out for a trip.  One of my family’s favorite quick and easy snacks to make on the road are Fire Crackers.  Fire crackers are simple to make, require things that you probably already have in your RV kitchen, and do not require any cooking.  You can eat them alone or pair them with a soup.

Ingredients

• 1 2/3 cups vegetable oil
• 1 teaspoon garlic powder
• 1 teaspoon onion powder
• 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
• 2 (1 ounce) envelopes ranch dressing mix
• 3 tablespoons crushed red pepper flakes
• 1 (16.5 ounce) package multigrain saltine crackers

Directions

1. In a 2 gallon plastic zipper bag, mix in the vegetable oil, garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper, ranch dressing mix, and crushed red pepper flakes. Seal the bag tightly and mix the ingredients by kneading and massaging the bag with your hands making sure to thoroughly combine the oil and spices into a consistent spice mixture.
2. Pour the saltine crackers into the bag containing the mixture and seal tightly. Turn the bag over to ensure both sides of the crackers are completely covered with the spice mixture.
3. Let the bag sit with the crackers inside for about an hour, then turn it over again to coat the other side of the crackers more thoroughly. Repeat this step several more times as necessary until the crackers are evenly and generously covered with the spices. Allow the bag to sit overnight to be sure the crackers soak in the spice mixture and have enough time for the vegetable oil to dry.
4. Remove crackers and serve with whatever you desire including cheese, chili, or simply as a crunchy snack that is great tasting on its own.
